Blair West are supporting True Potential LLP with the appointment of a Senior Legal Counsel appointment who will become a key part of a newly formed team.

Founded in 2007, the business employs over 400 people, working with near 1,000 financial advisors. They offer a robust hybrid advice offering, with high levels of recurring revenue and a scalable technology platform. In January 2022, the business sold a majority stake to leading international private equity firm Cinven, providing the platform for further growth. The business operates across three core service lines:

• True Potential Investments LLP – An FCA-regulated platform operator, investment manager, and pension operator and administrator. 2024 saw the business surpass £30 billion of assets under management.
• True Potential Wealth Management LLP – FCA-regulated advisory businesses serving 512,00 investment clients throughout the UK with a 98% retention rate.
• True Potential Adviser Services LLP – Providing back-office, technology and compliance

The business remains one of the North East’s fastest-growing companies, with sixteen consecutive years of growth and expected revenues in FY23 of over £400m. It is expected that the successful candidate will have 5-8 years PQE, a background in either commercial or corporate law, with meticulous attention to detail and the gravitas to influence stakeholders at all levels.

The Senior Legal Counsel will need to be able to build relationships with current existing external providers, whilst adding commercial value in the development of legal frameworks enabling the business to continue its impressive growth trajectory.

The opportunity:

• Proactively supporting the General Counsel & Company Secretary with the development of all legal and governance frameworks.
• Providing pragmatic legal advice to Board Members and “Heads of Departments”.
• Review of existing commercial contracts and agreements across the group.
• Drafting new agreements and policies, working closely with colleagues in finance, sales & operations to ensure new contracts and frameworks are robust and fit for purpose.
• Ensuring adherence to FCA regulations and other governance & reporting requirements.
• Review and update policies relating to GDPR / IP / technology.
• Build relationships with existing external third-party advisors.
• Providing support with any future DD / M&A transactions.
• Becoming a trusted business partner to group colleagues, ensuring necessary training and awareness are delivered across a range of legal and compliance matters.
• Supporting the resolution of legal disputes.

You’ll be the ideal candidate for this position if you’re:

• A qualified solicitor, with a suitable level of PQE gained in private practice, ideally with a background in commercial/corporate law. 
• Experience in commercial contracts review and negotiation (preferably gained in-house).  
• Experience of working in an FCA or regulated environment. 
• Exposure to Private Equity transactions.  
• Ability to operate at a cross-functional level to effectively support internal stakeholders. 
• Exceptional communication skills, able to influence, challenge and provide pragmatic advice.  
• An understanding of IP / technology laws would be advantageous.
